Howto install the 8192cu driver to get this adapter to work on ubuntu and configuring to load at startup.

(Note: the old machine I added it to, requires unpluging and plug the device each startup)
(props to: http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=10656582&postcount=10)

First download the linux source from this page http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=48&PFid=48&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false&Downloads=true#RTL8192CU

Unzip. Then extract the contained tar.gz. Then cd to the extracted folder. And do the following:
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-generic
make
sudo make install
sudo modprobe 8192cu

Now the wireless network should be working.

Lastly to configure to startup at startup automatically:
Code: Select all
gedit /etc/modules

and add a new line at the end with the module name:
Code: Select all
8192cu

Lastly after kernel is updated during system updates you need to do a make clean and repeat above steps.

For the old machine to find the device on boot without un/pluging, fixed either by:

1. better physical usb connection
2. sudo modprobe -r usb_storage; sudo modprobe usb_storage
3. sudo /etc/init.d/udev restart

don't know which fixed it. But seems to work now. yay,
