Make Live USB Stick, heres my instructions http://intodis.com/info/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=144 or go to pendrivelinux (simpler if not requiring a persistent stick) ...

Then if you are confident then get a new RAM Stick, 2GB DDR2 5300/667 200Pin SODDIUM Laptop, and upgrade the 512 one (check you have the access plane in the bottom of EeePC) see youtube for video howtos.

For me it was important to have an wired ethernet (LAN) connection connected during the install, otherwise the wired LAN port would be configured correctly.

Then follow the instructions here https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EeePC#head-5c787e923f2f395734d67c1cbc211a33f8a34206 to install and configure the EeePc/Ubuntu to use take advantage of all the devices features.

Notes:
1. When following the above some mods need to be run as the standard user, rather than with sudo.
2. Compiz works out of the box, I spent a few hours trying the get a workspace switching feature working only to find that I need four workspaces before the feature kicked in (three doesn't work).
3. The webcam didn't work but it seemed that it is only because the BIOS has it disabled. Enable and it should work.
4. Some Function keys (Audio) still don't work (yet, the search continues for the solution).
